This paint protection film tools list is the exact kit I hand a DIY installer, in the order they buy it. Three waves: Wave 1 is the starter kit for the practice phase, Wave 2 is the full toolkit before you touch a real car, Wave 3 is advanced tools for customer cars only. No filler.
The tools cost money. The training is the TVP PPF Manual. I am Yung Chang. I install paint protection film for a living and I teach DIY installers. Every tool on this page is one I would hand to a DIY installer.

Marks the slip and tack bottles and practice-film cut lines so nothing gets mixed up.

Check price on Amazon →ScotchBlue painter’s tape + Duck red electrical tape
The bottle-labeling pair for the blue-slip/red-tack convention.
Check price on Amazon → Check price on Amazon →I do not publish prices because Amazon changes them daily. The three biggest line items in Wave 1 are the heat gun, the practice film, and the sawhorses. The blades, tape, and shampoo cost the least. Buy it once, buy it right, and start the TVP PPF Manual while the boxes arrive. The expensive mistakes happen when tools meet a real car before training does.
Wave 2: Full PPF Toolkit Before Real Cars
Buy these before Module 5 of the DIY library, before film goes on a real car.

What Not to Buy: 4 PPF Beginner Mistakes
Honest list, because this is where beginners waste money:
- Vinyl film marketed as PPF. If the price looks too good, check the material. Vinyl is not TPU and it will teach you nothing about real installs.
- Wash-and-wax soap or dish soap. Wax under film is a contamination risk. pH-neutral wash only.
- A plotter on day one. Learn to bulk install by hand first. The plotter comes when job volume pays for it.
- A second blade brand. The 30-degree spec is what matters, not the name on the blade.
Skip the four mistakes above.
The TVP PPF Manual teaches you to make your mistakes on a junk hood instead of a real car.

Tools are the easy half. The hard half is hands: squeegee control, stretch, heat, and edges, learned in order on a junk hood before film touches a real car. The TVP PPF Manual takes you from zero to your first practice install on a junk hood — 78 chapters, in order.
FAQ
How much do PPF installation tools cost?
The starter kit is the Wave 1 list above plus practice film. Waves 1 and 2 together are the full pre-car toolkit. Wave 3 adds the polisher and advanced tools later. I do not publish prices because Amazon changes them daily. The biggest Wave 1 line items are the heat gun, the practice film, and the sawhorses. The blades, tape, and shampoo cost the least. Check the current price on each link; Amazon sets and changes its own prices.
Can I use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun?
No. You need variable temperature control and concentrator nozzles to shrink fingers and set edges without scorching film. A proper heat gun is not the place to save money.
What is slip solution made of?
2 ml of Johnson’s baby shampoo per 32 oz of purified or distilled water, per 3M’s installation guideline. Mix it fresh every day and never store it overnight. Never use tap water. SunTek’s Reaction film wants Film-On concentrate instead of baby shampoo, per Eastman’s Reaction guide, so your film maker’s bulletin wins on their film. Everything for the mix is in Wave 1.
What is tack solution made of?
The standard tack mix is 15% isopropyl alcohol in purified or distilled water: 150 ml of 99% IPA plus 850 ml of water, per 3M’s installation guideline. SunTek’s Reaction guide publishes the same 15% IPA tack recipe. Avery’s bulletins specify their own tack mixes by film line, so your film maker’s bulletin wins on their film. Tack solution anchors the film in place; slip solution lets it move.
What knife do I need for PPF?
A 9mm snap-off knife with 30-degree blades, which is what 3M lists in its installation tools. Snap to a fresh edge every panel, keep blade exposure short, and reach for knifeless tape first whenever film is trimmed on paint.
Do I need a plotter to install PPF?
No. Every installer should learn bulk installation by hand first. Plotters and pattern software come when job volume justifies them.
Can I install paint protection film myself?
Yes. That is what the DIY library is built for. Start on practice panels with the Wave 1 starter kit, learn squeegee control, stretch, and heat on a junk hood, then move to real cars with the full toolkit. Nobody’s first install is a customer car. Expect your first panels to be ugly. That is what practice film is for.
How much does DIY PPF cost compared to a professional install?
DIY costs the toolkit on this page plus bulk film. The real savings come after the learning curve, when your installs stop being practice.
What is the difference between PPF and vinyl wrap?
PPF is a clear thermoplastic urethane film that protects paint from rock chips and scratches, and quality films self-heal swirl marks with heat. Vinyl wrap is a cosmetic color-change film: thinner, no real impact protection, no self-healing. They install differently, so vinyl practice does not transfer to PPF.
What temperature should I install PPF at?
3M publishes 60 to 85F for application, with 70 to 79F as the sweet spot, per 3M’s installation guideline. Other makers publish their own windows: STEK recommends 68 to 77F, SunTek lists 60 to 90F for PPF C and 64 to 75F ambient for Reaction, and Avery and XPEL publish no public ambient window. Your film maker’s bulletin wins on their film. Too cold and the film will not conform; too hot and your slip solution flashes off before you can position the film. Check the panel surface with an infrared thermometer (Wave 1) before every install.
A pro charges $1,200 to $3,000 for a full front.
